If you own property, what are you actually allowed to do with it?

How property ownership and home transactions work

1 · Start with the idea

Ownership is not one giant right. It is a group of rights. An owner can often possess the property, use it, transfer it, use it as security, and keep others out, subject to law and private restrictions.

2 · Picture it

A landlord may let a tenant live in the property without giving the tenant ownership. That shows how one part of the owner's rights can be shared while other rights stay with the owner.

3 · Now learn the English words

bundle of rightsthe group of legal rights that make up ownership
encumberto place a claim or burden on property, such as using it as security for a debt

4 · Why this matters

Later topics such as leases, easements, loans, and transfers are much easier when ownership is understood as a bundle rather than one indivisible thing.

5 · Check yourself

Can an owner give someone the right to use a property without giving away every ownership right?

Show answer

Yes. Ownership rights can be separated and shared in different ways.
